Le 14 décembre au soir, la salle de cinéma était comble au Centre Culturel Roshenberi à Suleymani, pour la projection de nos huit films documentaires accompagnés des vignettes d’interview “Est-ce que 20 ans est le plus bel âge de la vie?”

La première dame d’Irak, Madame Hero Talabani (qui nous avait fait le plaisir et l’honneur de nous inviter à dîner chez elle deux soirs auparavant) était présente, ainsi que le Docteur Frédéric Tissot, Consul de France au Kurdistan d’Irak, et Amélie Banzet, directrice de l’Institut Culturel Français d’Erbil. 

Une soirée impressionnante, durant laquelle nos stagiaires et nous-mêmes avons découvert avec émotion notre travail commun sur grand écran… C’était hélas aussi le temps de dire au revoir à tous nos amis et compagnons de travail irakiens, car notre avion repartait pour Paris, via Vienne, le lendemain après-midi. Ils étaient tous là, et nous tenons à les en remercier chaleureusement!

L’aventure ne s’arrête pas là pour notre atelier, la prochaine édition étant déjà prévue pour le printemps 2009 ! Nous organiserons également le premier festival de cinéma documentaire de Suleymani en octobre 2009, en présence de cinéastes kurdes, irakiens et étrangers.

On the evening of December 14th, the cinema theater was filled to capacity at the Roshenberi Cultural Center in Suleymani, where our eight documentary films were screened with our short video interviews from the series “Is twenty years old the most beautiful age in the life?”

The First Lady of Iraq, Mrs Hero Talabani, who had kindly invited us for dinner at her villa two days ago, was here, as well as Docteur Frédéric Tissot, French Consul in Iraqi Kurdistan, and Amélie Banzet, director of the French Cultural Institute in Erbil. 

An impressive night, during which we have all discovered our mutual work on the big screen. It was unfortunately time to say goodbye to our friends and work companions in Iraq, because we were flying back to Paris, via Vienna, on the next day… All of them where present, and we would like to thank them.

But it is not the end of our workshop’s adventures! The next edition is scheduled for Spring 2009. We will also organize the very first documentary film festival in Suleymani in October 2009, in the presence of Kurdish, Iraqi and foreign filmmakers.

D’un atelier à l’autre / From one workshop to another

Pour cette deuxième édition de l’atelier, l’Institut Kurdo-Français accueille six équipes de télévision, soit vingt-trois stagiaires d’origine arabe et kurde (Iran et Irak). Sur le thème “Avoir vingt ans”, chaque groupe réalisera un film documentaire d’environ 15 à 20 minutes.

L’atelier s’ouvre sur la projection de DaBa, la ville des Bidons, réalisé par Marywan Rauf lors du premier atelier (fév-mars 2008). Marywan est réalisateur et monteur. Il travaille pour la télévision de l’éducation du Kurdistan d’Irak. Depuis sa participation à l’atelier, il a réalisé un autre film documentaire, Snûr, et souhaite devenir cinéaste dans le domaine de la fiction. DaBa, la ville des Bidons raconte la vie quotidienne des laissés pour compte à Sulaimaniya. Dans un pays qui est un des principaux producteurs de pétrole, certains survivent du recyclage des bidons utilisés pour vendre l’essence à la sauvette. Marywan Rauf nous montre un nouveau montage de son film documentaire, sous-titré en arabe, car cette fois-ci, le groupe comprend aussi des stagiaires arabes chiites.

Après la projection, les stagiaires pressent le réalisateur de questions : quelle est la part de fiction? Si l’un des personnages a joué une situation, peut-on vraiment dire que DaBa est un film documentaire? Marywan défend son point de vue d’auteur, expliquant que le documentaire ne peut pas être seulement un témoignage, et insiste sur l’importance de la mise en scène. Le ton est donné : le matin même, Fabrice Coppin, formateur en réalisation, avait insisté lors de son cours sur la nécessité absolue d’écrire au maximum son film documentaire.

“La situation actuelle du cinéma kurde n’est pas bonne”, m’explique Marywan lorsque je l’interroge. “J’espère qu’à l’avenir, grâce à des formations comme celle dispensée à l’atelier, nous pourrons avoir de bons cinéastes ici.”
Quel conseil donnerait Marywan aux nouveaux stagiaires? “Écoutez les formateurs! Nous avons besoin d’eux. Ils sont vraiment compétents. Ce serait formidable si cet atelier pouvait durer toute l’année. “

For the second edition of the workshop, the Kurdish-French Institute has invited six television teams (twenty-three trainees altogether) from Arabic as well as Kurdish origins (Iran and Irak).

The workshop begins with the screening of DaBa, the city of cans, a documentary film directed by Marywan Rauf during the first workshop (February-March 2008). Marywan is a film director and an editor. He works for the Kurdish Iraqi educational TV. After the workshop, he directed a second documentary, Snûr, and wishes to make feature films in the future. DaBa, the city of cans, is a daily life unreached account Sulaimaniya. In a country that is one of the major oil producers, some survive recycling cans used to sell gasoline at the haste. As Shiite trainees have joined the workshop this year, Marywan Rauf presents the recently edited version of his film, with Arabic subtitles.

Just after the screening, Marywan Rauf has to answer to the numerous questions asked by the trainees : to which extent is the film fictional? If one of the characters has been asked to replay a situation, can one still assume that DaBa is a documentary? Marywan stands up for his point of view as an author, explaining that a documentary feature cannot only testimony, and insists on the importance of directing the film as he would have directed fiction. An important point that Fabrice Coppin, one of the filmmaking teachers, had been underlining the very same morning : it is absolutely necessary to write your story before shooting a documentary film.

“Current situation in Kurdish cinema is not good”, says Marywan when I interview him. “Hopefully, thanks to specific trainings like this workshop, we will have good film makers in the future.” What would Marywan advise to the new trainees? “Listen to the teachers! We need them. They are really qualified. That would be great if such a workshop could be full-time all over the year”.
